DEPARTURE LOUNGE 2008

As Paul Jewell's squad restructuring swings into full tilt, we pay our respects to the first batch of
casualties  of the Rams shocking Premiership performance.

Steve Howard -  Possibly the most important player in our promotion season with a Howard goal being the difference between one point and three on numerous occasions. Howard was also not averse to dropping back and defending the lead in front of the defence. A lot was asked of him in the Premier League and like many others, struggled to step up.

Best Moment: You could pick any single goal away victory where he scored but it has to be his three goals in the two games at Southampton.

Worst Moment: His Penalty miss against Blackburn this season.

Matt Oakley- As a captain he neither screamed at people nor smashed up the opposition. However, the end justified the means as he lead us to promotion. One of the few who didn’t look out his depth in the Premier League but needed better players around him.

Best Moment: His scorching 30 yarder against WBA at home. Lifting the Play-off trophy.

Worst Moment: Admitted before Bolton away that the game was up and he was struggling to motivate players. Sold himself short big time signing for Leicester.

Jon Macken - He would have been alright as an insurance policy against Howard for six months. However, Billy signed him for 18, bigged him up and played him ahead of Lupoli. Last January peopled wondered why and we’re still none the wiser. Keegan must have been on crack to pay £5million for this guy.

Best Moment: Surprisingly picked in a 4-4-2 at Southampton away in the Play-Off’s semi. The Rams won 2-1, job done.

Worst Moment: Hull at home. He failed to score, Hull didn’t, the rot set in.

It's amazing he was only with us for 18 months.
Derby have rarely spent a better £1m.

The Man City exec of 2002 arrive in Preston
to conclude the Macken deal.

Andy Griffin -
A strange signing which briefly checked Griffins descent down the divisions. He was never truly awful but equally never likely to bring anything to the party…and didn’t. Might have been ok as a squad man, but being almost ever present in a leaky defence further exposed him.

Best Moment: Played in the Rams only victory to date.

Worst Moment: Ever present for any debacle you care to mention. Weasly wanker said he should never have signed for Derby. The feelings mutual.

Bob Malcolm - Another one bigged up by Billy on arrival and unbelievably kept Seth out the team for a few weeks. Never really came back from injury and gradually became a joke figure due to a few Neanderthal cameos. His drink driving debacle barely needs repeating. But being asleep in the middle lane of the M1 was a good indicator of Boab's general awareness of what was going on around him.

Best Moment: Apparently he played well in the 1-0 win at Wolves.

Worst Moment: Being subbed after half an hour away to Southampton & 'that' cat nap.

Stephen Bywater

Bywater divided opinion. Many thought he was “England’s no.1”; others thought he was more about heroics than basics. Had a habit of “nearly” preventing goals: commendable effort or just chocolate wrists?

Best Moment: A clean sheet in the Play-Off final, followed by his legendary "get your rat out" TV outburst

Worst Moment: Pompey’s soft first goal back in August followed by his horrific "Sealy called me a c.u.n.t" comment on Sky soccer Saturday. It was downhill from there.

Griff (apologies to 99% of readers who won't
get that) decided the contract on offer from Stoke
was more substantial than his Derby deal..

Mild mannered Bywater has easily slotted
into the first team group at Ipswich.
